Lions Nip Tigers In Overtime Thriller

Princeton, NJ - Maureen Lane scored 20 points and pulled down 11 rebounds but the Tigers fell one-point short of their third straight win with a 73-72 overtime loss at the hands of Columbia on Saturday night. A thrilling game with 18 lead changes and 11 ties snapped Princeton's two-game win streak and ended Columbia's season on a winning note.
Princeton jumped out to an early 11-4 lead but it was Columbia that went into halftime with a 31-27 advantage. Four quick points to open the second period gave the Lions the game's biggest lead, 35-27. Princeton went on a 9-0 run with a three-pointer from Kelly Schaeffer and back-to-back three-point baskets from Lane and it led 36-35. The game would go back and forth for the remainder of the half with both teams playing well at crucial moments. Columbia's Patricia Kern nailed two free-throws with 23 seconds remaining in regulation to put the Lion's up by four. Freshman Karen Bolster answered with the shot clock winding down by hitting an NBA-range three-pointer to make it a one-point game with 10 seconds remaining. Another Kern foul shot gave the Lions a two points cushion and with four ticks remaining in the second period, Allison Cahill drove the lane, drew the foul and calmly knocked down two clutch free-throws to send the game into overtime.
The overtime period saw four more lead changes, but it was the sister combination of Patricia and Susan Kern that lifted the Lions to victory. Lane's three-point basket with 22 seconds remaining gave the Tigers a 72-71 lead, but Susan Kern's lay-up assisted by Patricia Kern with 7 seconds to play won the game. The Kern sisters scored eight of Columbia's 10 overtime points.
Schaeffer led the Tigers in scoring with 22 points, Lane added a team-high five assists to her 20 points and 11 rebounds and Cahill finished with 16 points for Princeton. Edyette Key led Columbia with a game-high 26 points, Patricia Kern added 14.
For the second straight night, Princeton tied a school mark for three-pointers made with 13. Lane finished with four triples for the second straight night, Schaeffer knocked down five from beyond the arc. The Tigers fall to 10-16 overall and 4-9 in the Ivy League. Columbia finishes the year at 12-14 and 6-8 in the conference. Princeton wraps up the 2001-02 season with Pennsylvania visiting Jadwin Gym on Wednesday night.
