Athens, Ga. - Brie Galicinao batted three for three at the plate including one double and one RBI as the Tigers defeated the Lady Colonials of Nicholls State, 5-0 in today's first game. In the second game of today, the Tiger softballers lost to the No. 21 Bulldogs of Georgia, 4-3 in extra innings. Princeton moves to 6-8 on the season.
Galicinao was also the winning pitcher against Nicholls State, earning her first shutout of the season while allowing only four hits and striking out eight Lady Colonial batters. Kim Veenstra picked up two RBIs on two sac flies.
Galicinao doubled to right center to start the fourth and moved to third on a single by Kristin Del Calvo. The Tigers posted the first run of the game when Galicinao came home on a sac fly off the bat Veenstra. Lauren Palmer's double into left center drove in Becky Nemec, who had reached first on a fielder's choice, for the second run of the inning. The Tigers added three in the fifth when Nicholls State committed three straight infield errors. Jen Neil, Kristin Lueke and Wendy Bingham each scored in the inning to increase the lead to 5-0.
Nichols State threatened in the top of the seventh, putting runners at the corners, but the Tigers were able to hold onto the shutout.
Against Georgia, the Tigers started scoring runs early. Galicinao walked in the first inning and scored on Del Calvo's two-run shot over the right-centerfield fence. For Del Calvo, today's homerun is her fourth of the season.
Georgia threatened in the first inning when lead-off Nicole Barber singled into right field, stole second, and reached third on a pass ball. Bingham, the Tigers' pitcher, loaded the bases with no outs yet got Kristen Bell to hit into a double play where Barber was thrown out at home to keep the Bulldogs off the scoreboard. Nemec fielded a ball at third base for the final out of the inning.
Georgia tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth when Amy Brannan's single into left field brought two bulldogs home. Georgia had the bases loaded with two outs when Brannan picked up the RBIs
Galicinao singled in the sixth and eventually scored to make the score 3-2. Georgia answered in the bottom of the sixth and sent the game into the seventh inning tied at 3-3.
Georgia's Katie Lewis reached first on an infield error in the bottom of the eighth, move to second on single and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Kristen Bell's sac fly into right field scored Lewis for the game winner.
Princeton travels to Mercer tomorrow for a doubleheader, the first game starts at 11:00 a.m.
