Baseball Drops Close One To William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, VA - Princeton got seven strong innings from hurler Ryan Quillian, but still dropped a 6-3 decision to William & Mary on a cold Friday night at Plumeri Park. The Tigers are now 2-10, the Tribe moves to 13-10.
Princeton brought a six-game losing streak into tonight's game. The Tigers opened their season with a 1-3 mark in a four-game series at Old Dominion. They defeated Duke in the first contest of the spring trip but have since dropped three games to the Blue Devils, two games to North Carolina and most recently a 12-4 decision to Elon.
William & Mary was threatening to score in the bottom of the first. Michael Brown hit a one-out double to score John Lentz but the Tigers turned that into a double play. Right fielder Ryan Reich got the ball, threw it to shortstop Pat Boran, who cut down Marshall Hubbard at the plate. Catcher Tim Lahey turned around and gunned down Brown, who was trying to advance to third on the play to complete the double play and end the inning. The Tribe put one more run on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 2-0 lead.
Princeton cut William & Mary's lead to 2-1 in the top of the sixth inning. Adam Balkan legged out a two-out triple to right field and then scored on Jon Miller's double down the right field line.
The Tigers took a 3-2 lead with two runs in the top of the seventh inning. Ryan Eldridge opened the inning with a single down the left field line. Reich doubled down the right field line to give Princeton runners on second and third with one out. Eldridge scored and Reich advanced to third on a wild pitch from Tribe hurler Whitt Farr. Steve Young came on to pinch hit for Mike Chernoff and singled through the left side to score Reich for the second run of the inning.
That lead did not last for long, Kevin Healy singled to center to score Mitch Walk and knot the game at three with runners on first and second with one out. Pinch hitter C.J. Stimpson doubled to right center to score Matt McGuire and make it second and third with one out. Quillian got one batter swinging and the next one to fly out to left field to end the inning.
Princeton sent top hurler Ryan Quillian to the mound. The 2001 Ivy League Pitcher of the Year, Quillian entered tonight's game with a 4.00 ERA. In nine innings of work during his first two appearances of the season he gave up 11 hits, four earned runs and eight strikeouts. Tonight he threw seven innings, scattering seven hits, two earned runs and six strikeouts. Mark Siano came on to pitch the eighth inning, striking out one and giving up two hits.
William & Mary's Whitt Farr got the start. He brought a 3-3 record into the contest with a 3.00 era. In 48 innings on the mound, Farr gave up 36 hits, 16 earned runs and recorded 46 strikeouts. He recorded 11 strikeouts in the game, allowing seven hits and three earned runs in seven innings.
Princeton will conclude its spring trip with three more games against the Tribe. They two teams will meet for a doubleheader on Saturday. The first game will start at 2 p.m. The series will conclude on Sunday with a 1 p.m. game. Princeton will open its home and Ivy League season on Friday, March 29 at 11:30 with a doubleheader against Pennsylvania. The Tigers will host the Quakers on Saturday, March 30 at 11:30. Those games will be held at Clarke Field.
