Marrieta, Ga. - Three infield errors cost the Tigers four runs in the second inning as Princeton fell to Ohio State 5-3 in the first game of today. In a pitcher's dual Princeton lost to Central Florida 6-3 in the second game. Today's matches took place in day one of the Buzz Classic hosted by Georgia Tech. Princeton moves to 8-10 on the season.
The Tigers put runners at first and second in the first inning against Ohio State when Brie Galicinao singled down the right field line and was pushed to second by Kristin Del Calvo's single down the left field line but the Tigers failed to put any runs on the board.
Ohio State's Anna Smith scored when she stole second, reach third on a throwing error by the catcher and scored when the Princeton third baseman missed the throw. Sarah West put Ohio State up 4-0 in the first with a two-out three-run homerun over the right field fence. In all, the Tigers gave up 4 runs on three hits and three errors in the first inning. In the third, Jen Neil got to first on a walk and stole second. Wendy Bingham reached first on an error by the Buckeye shortstop. Galicinao picked up a RBI with a single down the right field line, scoring Neil from second. The Tigers loaded the bases with Bingham on third, Galicinao on second and Del Calvo on first with one out. Kim Veenstra scored Bingham when she reached first on an error by the second baseman. Becky Nemec scored Galicinao and reached first on a fielder's choice to pull the score back to 4-3. The Tigers scored three runs on one hit and three errors in the third inning.
Kristine Himes' solo shot over the left field fence increased the Buckeye lead to 5-3. That would be all the Buckeyes needed as they went on to beat the Tigers in the first game.
Galicinao was the losing pitcher in the game in which Princeton allowed three unearned runs and committed four errors. She struck out three Buckeyes and gave up four hits and stands at 3-5 on the season.
Galicinao's two-out homerun in the first inning opened a 1-0 lead for the Tigers against the Knights of Central Florida in today's second game. Veenstra sent her own solo shot over the left field fence to begin the second inning making the score 2-0.
Central Florida's Tepora Hess opened the fourth with a double down the left field line. She moved to third on a pass ball. Rachelle Schmidt's hit dropped a few feet outside the batters' box and Hess, coming from third, beat the throw home making the score 2-1.
Florida Central threaten in the seventh, loading the bases with one out. Lindsay Bush scored the game evening run when Nikki Green reached on fielder's choice and there was an error at the plate.
The game went into extra innings and the international tie-breaker was in effect where a runner is placed at second to begin the eight inning. A long ball into left field by Bush scored two runs as the Knights took a 4-2 lead. Before the inning was over, Central Florida opened a 6-2 lead.
Princeton would add only one run in the eighth and lost the game.
The Tigers will face UNC-Greensboro at 10:00 a.m. and No. 20 Florida State at 12:00 p.m. tomorrow, day two of the Buzz Classic.
