Lawrence, Kan. - Brie Galicinao went three-for-four at the plate with two RBIs as the Tigers defeated Portland State in the first game of the Kansas Invitational. Princeton could not produce runs in the second contest of the day as the Tigers slipped to the Jayhawks of Kansas 3-0. Princeton stands at 3-1 on the season. Portland State slips to 4-9 and Kansas improves to 9-7.
The Tigers figured they had a strong freshmen class, they were right. Freshman Melissa Finley picked up the victory, making her career debut on the mound for the Tigers against Portland State. Finely allowed two runs on seven hits. She struck out two batters. Behind the plate, making her third start, was freshman Ty Ries. Freshman, Laureen Palmer, who batted for Ries went two-for three at the plate. Princeton scored in the second inning when freshman Becky Nemec doubled into center field and reached third on the throw. Next batter up was Palmer who reached first on a fielder's choice on got to second on a throwing error by Portland State's second baseman, Amy Hulzo. Nemec came home on the error. The Tigers went up 3-0 in the fifth when freshman Kristin Lueke and junior Jen Neil scored. Portland State staged a comeback in the fifth but was able to catch the Tigers.
Galicinao pitched the second game and allowed three runs on nine hits. She struck out two Jayhawks and falls to 1-1 on the season. Kristin Del Calvo went two-for-three at the plate but the Tigers could only register nine hits off Kansas Kara Pierce who struck out five Tigers.
Kansas scored three runs in the fourth inning and the Tigers could rally.
Princeton moves to 3-1 for the season and will face Indiana State at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow.
