The Weekend - Princeton returns to Ivy League action with a pair of doubleheaders against Rolfe Division opponents Brown and Yale.
Senior Special - Chris Higgins scattered three hits in six innings of work in Princeton's 8-1 win over Rutgers on Tuesday. Pat Boran went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and four stolen bases in the win. The victory was the Tigers first win over the Scarlet Knights since a two-game sweep in 1991.
Road Trip - Princeton opened a 10-game road trip on Tuesday at Rutgers on Tuesday. The Tigers return to Ivy League action with doubleheaders against Brown and Yale this weekend, and have a midweek meeting with Seton Hall on April 18. Princeton will close out the road trip with a four-game series against Ivy League Gehrig Division rival Columbia on April 20-21.
Princeton vs. Brown - These two teams split last season's series at Clarke Field. Princeton took the opener 3-2, but dropped the second game 10-7. Ryan Quillian pitched a complete seven-inning game, giving up six hits and striking out four to pick up the win. The Bears pounded out 18 hits in game two, withTom Rowland taking the loss for the Tigers in the second game. Princeton is 3-5 against Brown during head coach Scott Bradley's tenure. Princeton vs. Yale - Princeton earned a split against Yale last season. David Boehle gave up six hits and two earned runs over the first six innings and Bill Broome came in to strike out the side in the seventh inning to give the Tigers a 4-2 win in game one. Chris Higgins gave up eight runs in five innings as Princeton dropped the second game 9-2. The Tigers hold a 7-1 edge over the Bulldogs over the past four seasons.
A Look Back - Princeton won its sixth-straight Gehrig Division title in 2001 with a 14-6 record. The Tigers defeated Rolfe Division winner Dartmouth in a three-game series to advance to the NCAA tournament, where they won their first NCAA tournament game in 36 years with a 11-6 win over the Citadel. Princeton closed out the season with a 23-25 record.
I'm Honored - Freshman Jason Vaughan was named the IvyLeagueSports.com Pitcher of the Week on April 9 after hurling a one-hitter in Princeton's 1-0 win over Dartmouth on Sunday. The only hit he gave up was an infield single in the first inning. Vaughan walked one batter and recorded four strikeouts in the win. This is his first pitcher of the week honor. The win improves his record to 2-1 with a 6.66 ERA. In 24.1 innings of work this season, Vaughan has given up 27 hits, 18 earned runs and struck out 11 batters. He has allowed just five earned runs and 14 hits over his last 19.1 innings.
Century Club - Princeton's 14-5 win at William & Mary on March 23 gave Tiger head coach Scott Bradley his 100th career win. In his first four seasons, Bradley led the Tigers to a 97-79 mark, four Gehrig Division titles, two Ivy League championships and two NCAA tournament appearances.
Closing Time - Thomas Pauly has recorded each of Princeton's six saves this season. Pauly has hurled 15.2 innings, giving up 13 hits and one earned run, while recording 19 strikeouts.
O' Captain, My Captain - Shortstop Pat Boran is Princeton's captain for the 2002 season. He was named to the IvyLeagueSports.com honor roll on April 2 after batting 5-for-13 with two RBI and five runs scored in the four-game sweep of Penn. Boran is batting .341 on 31-of-91 hitting with a team-leading 18 RBI and 17 runs scored in 24 games this season. He is also second on the team lead in doubles, with five, and is first on the team with a .440 slugging percentage.
Thieving - Pat Boran was 4-for-4 in stolen base attempts against Rutgers, and is 6-for-8 on the season. Steve Young is a perfect 5-for-5 in stolen base attempts, and Eric Fitzgerald is 3-for-3.
The Reich Stuff - Ryan Reich has been a constant in right field for the Tigers so far this season. He is currently fifth on the team with a .295 average on 26-for-88 hitting, and is tied for the team lead in doubles with six.
Hit Parade - Pat Boran has registered a team-leading 10 multiple-hit games this season. Adam Balkan is second on the list with eight multiple-hit games.
Streaking - Pat Boran's 10-game hitting streak came to an end in the 1-0 win over Dartmouth. Adam Balkan also saw his hitting streak snapped against the Big Green. He had brought a nine-game streak into that series. Ryan Reich currently has the longest active streak after hitting safely in the last four games.
Fresh Face - Ryan Eldridge went 8-for-18 last week with seven RBIs and three runs scored, including a 7-for-14 performance with six RBIs and two runs scored in Ivy action. He opened the week by going 1-for-4 with two RBIs in the 7-6 loss to Rider. Eldridge went 3-for-5 with one RBI in the 5-2 loss to Harvard and then was 3-for-3 in the first game against Dartmouth, an 11-2 Princeton win, with four RBIs and one run scored. He hit a two-run double in the first inning and stroked a two-run single in third. Eldridge capped his week with a 1-for-3 performance in the second half of the doubleheader. He scored the only run for the Tigers in the 1-0 win over the Big Green.
More Fresh Face - Freshman hurler Ross Ohlendorf has come on strong for the Tigers this season. He has won his last three games and leads the team with a 3-1 record. He is first amongst Princeton starters with a 1.82 ERA. In 24.2 innings, Ohlendorf has given up 26 hits and five earned runs while recording a team-high 27 strikeouts.
Closing In - Pat Boran is closing in on several Princeton career records. He is currently tied for eighth in career games played with 158, just three shy of the current record of 161, held by Andrew Hanson '01. Boran is second in all-time at bats with 568, two short of the record of 570, also held by Hanson. He has 126 runs scored in his career, good for second on the all-time charts, 15 behind Daniel Arendas' '86 record of 141. Boran also stands 14 hits behind Arendas' record of 202, and nine behind Matthew Evans '99 record of 49 career doubles.
Ivy Laurels - In 2001 Ryan Quillian became the first Princeton hurler to be named the Ivy League Pitcher of the year in the award's 24-year history. He posted a league-leading 1.30 ERA and 4-1 record in Ivy action. Quillian in 0-3 in his five starts this season with a 4.03 ERA. In 29 innings pitched he has given up 30 hits and 13 earned runs, while recording 23 strikeouts. Quillian is the only Princeton pitcher to pickoff an opposing runner this season.
Princeton Baseball History - Baseball was the first varsity sport at Princeton Unviersity and made its intercollegiate debut in November 1864. Since its inception as a varsity sport, Princeton has won 10 EIBL titles, the last five Gehrig Division titles, three Ivy League Championships and gone 1973-1593-46.
