SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - Ryan Eldridge was 4-for-5 with three RBIs, Ryan Reich was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Tim Lahey went 3-for-5 with one RBI but Princeton could not overcome a seven-run fifth inning by Seton Hall, dropping a 14-9 decision to the Pirates. The Tigers drop to 13-17 with the non-conference loss. Seton Hall, the 2001 BIG EAST champion, improves to 19-17.
Princeton hopped on the board with a run in the top of the first inning when Eldridge singled in Steve Young, but the Pirates came back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take the early 3-1 lead.
Each team added a run in the fourth inning. Eric Voelker roped a double to center and then scored on Tim Lahey's double to right. The Tigers added two more runs in the top of the fifth when Ryan Reich hit a two-run double to left that plated Eldridge and Adam Balkan to knot the game at 4-4. Unfortunately for the Tigers, Seton Hall would take an insurmountable lead with seven runs on three hits and one error in the bottom of the fifth. That inning was capped by Casey Grimm's two-out grand slam that gave the Pirates an 11-4 lead.
Princeton fought right back, scoring four runs in the top of the sixth. Lahey, Mike Chernoff and Pat Boran each singled up the middle to open the inning by loading the bases. Steve Young's fly ball to center scored Lahey with the first run of the inning. Balkan drew a walk, one of four walks he would take on the day, to load the bases. Jon Miller walked, which scored Chernoff and then Eldridge hit a two-run single through the right side that scored Balkan and Boran to cut the Pirates lead to 11-8.
The Tigers made it 11-9 with a run in the eighth. Balkan walked to open the inning and advanced to second on Eldridge's single to center. Reich came through again wit a single through the right side to score Balkan and bring Princeton to within two runs.
Seton Hall padded its lead with three runs in the eighth for a 14-9 lead that the Tigers could not overcome in the top of the ninth as the Pirates held on for the win.
Princeton stranded 13 runners in the game. Seton Hall left eight runners on base.
The Tigers used a battery of seven pitchers in the game. Chris Higgins got the start and went three innings, giving up six hits and three earned runs. Nathan Miller came on in relief and ended up with the loss. He threw 1.1 innings, allowing three hits, four runs and two earned runs. Tom Rowland, Mark Siano, Brian Biegen, Thomas Pauly and Bill Broome each saw action on the mound for Princeton in the game.
The Pirates employed six pitchers in the win. Jayson Rodriguez was on the mound in the fifth inning and got the win.
Princeton will return to action this weekend with its biggest series of the season to date. The Tigers will head to Columbia (16-14, 6-2 Ivy) for a four-game Ivy League Gehrig Division series against the Lions. The two teams are currently tied at the top of the division standings. Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. First pitch on Sunday is scheduled for noon.
