PRINCETON, NJ - Chris Higgins (Sr., Tulsa, OK) carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning of Princeton's 13-1 win over Monmouth in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at Clarke Field. Higgins' efforts were aided by some sparkling defensive play by the Tigers, who now just stand one game below the .500 mark with a 17-18 record. Monmouth is 16-5.
Princeton cranked out a game-high 17 hits for the fourth time this season. Tim Lahey (So., Milton, MA) led the way offensively for the Tigers, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, four RBIs and two runs scored. Eric Fitzgerald (So., Bellaire, TX) also turned in four RBIs and one run scored on 2-for-4 batting. Steve Young (So., Brabada Hills, CA) went a perfect 3-for-3, including a triple to right center, with one RBI and two runs scored. The Tigers jumped on Hawks starter Enrique Genao and posted seven runs in the bottom of the first inning on five hits and one error. Fitzgerald accounted for three RBIs and one run scored in the inning.
Young opened the third with his triple and then scored on Pat Boran's double down the leftfield line. Jon Miller plated Boran with a sacrifice fly to left for Princeton's second run of the inning.
The Tigers added three runs on three hits in the fourth inning and added another in the seventh to take a 13-0 lead before the Hawks put a run on the board in the top of the eighth.
Chuck Gookins singled to left to break up Higgins' no-hitter in the eighth. Chris Ciminiello followed that with a double to left to score Gookins with Monmouth's only run of the day.
Higgins pitched a total of eight innings in the game, giving up two hits, one run and one walk. He also recorded three strikeouts in win as he lowered his ERA to 3.72 and improves to 2-1. Nick Pappas (Sr., Metairie, LA) pitched the ninth inning to close out the game.
Monmouth used four pitchers in the game. Genao took the loss to drop to 2-2 on the year. He threw the first three innings and gave up nine runs on nine hits and four walks. Brian Driber and Tim Davis each pitched two innings before Tom Botwin came out to throw the eighth inning.
Princeton will play four non-conference games before it returns to Ivy League action vs. Cornell. The Tigers host a doubleheader with Pace on Saturday at noon before heading to Pace on Sunday for a single game scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Princeton will play at St. John's at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30. The Tigers head to Cornell for an Ivy League Gehrig Division doubleheader on May 3 before returning home to host two games against the Big Red on Sunday, May 5.
