PRINCETON, NJ - Pat Boran drove in Steve Young with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Princeton a 5-4 win in the second game of its doubleheader against Pace. The Tigers won the first game 9-3. Princeton improves to 19-18 with the pair of wins and is now over .500 for the first time this season. The Setters drop to 10-30 with the losses.
Boran's game-winning base hit in the ninth was his third hit of the day and the 202nd of his career. That ties him with Daniel P. Arendas '86 for first in the Princeton record books for hits in a career.
Adam Balkan went 3-for-8 with four RBIs and one run scored on the afternoon. Jon Miller was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored in the first game, and Ryan Eldridge also chilled in two RBIs on 2-for-4 hitting. Steve Young pitched in with a triple and three stolen bases. Ross Ohlendorf got the start in the first game and went five innings, scattering seven hits and three earned runs. He also recorded seven strikeouts as he improved to 5-2. Mark Siano came in to close out the game and gave up three this and no runs over the final two innings.
Jason Vaughan threw the first four innings of the second game in the no decision. He gave up seven hits, and four earned run, while recording five strikeouts. Scott Hindman pitched the sixth and seventh inning, surrendering no hits and striking out three. Bill Broome pitched one inning in relief to set the stage for Thomas Pauly. Pauly three the ninth inning and earned the win to improve to 2-1 on the year.
The Setters had tied up the second game at 4-4 with four runs in the top of the fifth. Both teams had their chances to score, but neither team could get anyone across the plate until the bottom of the ninth. Young opened the inning with a walk and then stole second. Boran drilled a hit over the leftfielders head to plate the winning run.
Princeton will play two more non-conference games before it returns to Ivy League action vs. Cornell. The Tigers head to Pace on Sunday for a single game scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Princeton will play at St. John's at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30. The Tigers head to Cornell for an Ivy League Gehrig Division doubleheader on May 3 before returning home to host two games against the Big Red on Sunday, May 5.
