Heavyweight Crew Nips Cornell To Retain Carnegie Cup

Princeton, N.J. -
The Princeton men's heavyweight crew team, defeated by Harvard last week, had another difficult day of racing. But this time the Tigers were the first to cross the line, a mere .5 seconds before Cornell. Yale trailed by open water in third, and Navy finished fourth. The first freshman eight also claimed a victory and remained undefeated.
Navy joined the race after the previously scheduled Princeton-Navy dual was cancelled. The inclusion of the Midshipmen gave spectators the rare chance to see each of Lake Carnegie's lanes filled with a boat in unusual four-boat racing. The morning was especially exciting because all four schools will race each other again at the Eastern Sprints in three weeks, and they got a taste of the speed in the league.
In the varsity eight race, Princeton led the field with a time of 5:49.7. Cornell finished second in 5:50.2, Yale third in 5:57.4, and Navy fourth in 6:05.2. In the second varsity race, Cornell's displayed its programs' depth as the Big Red defeated Princeton by four seconds. Navy and Yale were left to race each other for third, and Navy won that battle by 2.6 seconds. Both boats finished well of the pace of the lead crews.
The first freshman eight race featured the lone Princeton boat to defeat a Harvard crew last weekend, Princeton's undefeated Tiger frosh. The freshman eight again marched to victory, as they defeated Yale by one boat length. Yale edged Navy for second, and Cornell finished open water back in fourth.
Cornell won the third varsity eight race by four seconds over Princeton. The order of finish was the same as the second varsity, as Navy placed third and Yale placed fourth.
Navy scored its lone win of the day in the second freshman eight race, defeating Princeton by a boat length. For the Tigers, the race marked their third second place finish on the day to go along with their two victories. Cornell finished third, ahead of Yale in fourth.
