Princeton, N.J. - Kim Veenstra, playing her last game on 1895 Field, scored the game-winning run as the Tigers defeated the Hawks of Saint Joseph's, 3-2 in the 10-inning nightcap. Saint Joseph's won the first game, 1-0. Princeton wraps up the regular season at 32-16, 13-1 IVY while Saint Joseph's stands at 29-14. Princeton will compete in the NCAA Regionals to be held on May 16-19.
Cara Deldeo led off the first for the Hawks by being walked. She moved to second on a sac bunt and scored on an infield error to give Saint Joseph's an early 1-0 lead. It would be all the Hawks needed as they defeated the Tigers, 1-0. Princeton tallied four hits compared to Saint Joseph's three.
Brie Galicinao hit two-for-three in the loss and was also the losing pitcher. In five innings of work Galicinao struck out three hawks and allowed three hits, Wendy Bingham pitched the remaining two innings. Prior to today, Galicinao had won 13 games in a row, a streak dating back to Princeton's first game against Rutgers held on March 27. Galicinao scored in the first inning of the second game when she was brought home by Becky Nemec. Saint Joseph's evened the score at 1-1 in the third inning.
Veenstra's solo-homerun in the sixth put the Tigers up 2-1 but the Hawks once again answered, scoring one run in the seventh. The Tigers were unable to score in the bottom of the seventh and the game went into extra innings.
Veenstra singled to the shortstop to open the bottom of the tenth inning. Nemec's double into right field scored Veenstra as the Tiger won the game 3-2.
Sarah Jane White made her third start of the season. She pitched five innings allowing only two hits and striking out five hawks. Melissa Finley pitched the second half of the contest, allowing four hits and striking out five.
For seniors, Peggy Han, White, Veenstra and Galicinao, today's doubleheader was their final games played on 1895 field.
Princeton will compete in the NCAA Regionals that will be held May 16-19. The Tigers will find out when and where they will compete on May 12 at 9:00 p.m. The broadcast of the NCAA selection show will be aired on the ESPNews channel.
