Baseball Relinquishes Ivy Title To Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, MA - Harvard held on for a 2-1 win over Princeton in game two of the Ivy League Championship series on Sunday afternoon in Cambridge, MA to win its first league title since 1999, and 18th overall. The Crimson won game one, 5-1. The Tigers, winners of the last two Ivy titles, close out their season with a 22-23 record after capturing their seventh consecutive Gehrig Division title. The Crimson, now 20-24, earn the league's automatic bid into the NCAA tournament with the win.
Mark Mager went 4-for-4 with two doubles and one run scored for Harvard. Ian Wallace was 2-for-4 and drove in the winning run with an RBI single in the top of the fourth inning. Pat Boran, playing in his last game in a Princeton uniform, drove in the only Tigers run with a RBI single in the bottom of the third inning. Harvard struck first in the second game. Mager singled over Boran's head with two outs in the top of the first inning and then stole second base. Trey Hendricks continued to have a hot bat, hitting a single up the middle to score Mager and give the Crinson a 1-0 lead.
Boran tied the game at 1-1 with a RBI single to left in the bottom of the third. Steve Young drew a two-out walk and then went all the way to third on an errant throw from Sheffield in an attempted pickoff.
Mann ledoff the fourth with a double to the fence in left center. He advanced to third on a sacrifice fly from San Salvador. Wallace drove Mann home when he drilled a single up the middle with two outs for a 2-1 lead.
Mike Chernoff singled through the right side to open up the eighth inning. He was out at second on Steve Young's fielders choice. The same thing happened on the next play. Pat Boran reached first on a fielders choice and Young was called out at second. Eric Fitzgerald singled through the left side to give Princeton runners at first and second, but Barry Wahlburg was able to get Adam Balkan to pop out to second base to end the inning.
Ryan Quillian surrendered two runs on five hits over five innings in the start for Princeton. He recorded three strikeouts in the loss to drop to 3-5. Thomas Pauly came on in relief and gave up one hit in four innings.
Chaney Sheffield pitched the first five innings for the Crimson. He allowed just one run on three hits, with three strikeouts. Kenon Ronz came to the mound in the sixth and pitched 2.1 strong innings for Harvard. He gave up just one hit and struck out five batters. Wahlburg threw the final 1.2 innings and gave up one hit. He retired the side in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win.
