ITHACA, NY - The Princeton baseball team posted a 6-1 win in its first game of the day, but could not complete the sweep as it dropped a 9-7 decision to Cornell in the second half of Friday afternoon's doubleheader at Hoy Field in Ithaca, NY. Princeton is now 21-19, 12-6 in the Ivy League. Cornell is 14-29, 5-13 in the league. These two teams will close out the four-game series with a pair of games on Sunday, May 5 at Clarke Field.
The race for the Gehrig Division title will be decided on Sunday. The Tigers are looking for seventh-straight division title and will have to hold off Columbia. The Lions entered the weekend two games behind Princeton in the league standings with a 9-7 record and will play a four-game series vs. Pennsylvania.
Ross Ohlendorf took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, and a shutout into the seventh inning of the first game. He ended up hurling a complete game, four-hitter to pick up his team-leading sixth win of the season. Ohlendorf also recorded six strikeouts. Princeton posted five runs over the first two innings and added a sixth run in the top of the fifth. Mike Chernoff was 1-for-3 with an RBI and one run scored. Eric Fitzgerald was 1-for-4 with one runs scored, on RBI and two stolen bases in the game.
Chris Schutt took the loss for the Big Red in the opener. He allowed six runs on five hits and four walks over seven innings.
Cornell got on the board first in the second game, posting one run in each of the first two innings. The Tigers fought back and took a 5-1 lead with five runs in the top of the third. Fitzgerald opened the inning by cranking a triple off of the fence in centerfield to plate Pat Boran. Adam Balkan singled through the left side to score Fitzgerald and tie the game at 2-2. Ryan Eldridge kept the inning going with a single up the middle that scored Balkan. Tim Lahey capped off the inning by driving in Eldridge and Jon Miller. Lahey was 1-for-3 with three RBIs in the second game.
Princeton added another run in the fifth and one more in the sixth, but Cornell posted seven runs to take a 9-7 lead. Chris Schutt and Matt Miller recorded back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the sixth to give Cornell the two-run cushion.
Jason Vaughan got the start for the Tigers in the second game and pitched 4.1 innings. He gave up four earned runs on five hits, six walks and four strikeouts. Mark Siano pitched 0.2 innings in relief, surrendering two runs on two hits. Bill Broome pitched the sixth inning and ended up with the loss to drop to 0-2 on the season. Thomas Pauly closed out the game for the Tigers by throwing the final two innings. he gave up no hits and recordes three strikeouts.
These two teams will close out the Ivy League portion of their regular season schedule with two games on Sunday, May 5. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
