Princeton, N.J. - After setting a school record for most ties in a single season last year, the Tigers pick up exactly where they left off with a 2-2 tie against Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday night at Lourie-Love Field. The Tigers open the season with a tie for the 14th time in program history while FDU moves to 2-1-2 on the year.
Senior tri-captain Bob Nye scored from 30 yards out and Princeton took an early 1-0 lead. After senior Matt Douglas knocked in a header off freshman Neil Chaudhuri's assist at the 15-minute mark, the Tigers led 2-0 with only two shot attempts on the night. The third shot on goal for Princeton was a penalty kick from tri-captain Jeff Hare, but a save by FDU goalie Andrew Nucifora kept the Knights within two goals. Fairleigh Dickinson answered with Nate Olson's first goal of the night at 22:36 and Princeton led 2-1 at the half. Olson scored again in the 71st minute and Princeton entered overtime for the seventh time in its last 17 games.
"Fairleigh Dickinson is a very good team," says Princeton coach Jim Barlow. "It's disappointing to lose a two-goal lead, but they are a veteran squad and we're a very young team. All things considered, I think we played well."
Last year, the Tigers finished with five ties and a 10-3-5 overall record. After two scoreless overtime periods, they begin the 2002 season 0-0-1. Senior goalkeeper Jason White registered five saves. Nucifora had two saves for FDU.
Princeton returns to action this Sunday when it faces Seton Hall. The Pirates won the opening game of today's men's soccer double-header, defeated Pennsylvania 1-0. Princeton will host another double-header on Sunday, with Fairleigh Dickinson playing Pennsylvania at noon and the Tigers playing Seton Hall at 2:30 p.m. Both games will be held at Lourie-Love Field and admission is $6 for adults and $4 for students.
