New Haven, Conn. - Maura Gallagher and Kristina Fontanez scored second half goals to snap a scoreless tie and lead the 21st-ranked Princeton women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Yale.
The victory improved Princeton to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the Ivy League on the young season. Princeton also avenged a 1-0 loss to Yale in Princeton last November in the Tigers only league loss during their 2001 Ivy championship season.
The game was scoreless into the 69th minute before Gallagher, a freshman, scored on an assist from Janine Willis on a corner kick.
Fontanez, a sophomore, then banged in the clincher in the 79th minute off a misplayed ball. Rochelle Willis picked up the assist on the goal.
Jean Poster made four saves for the shutout for the Tigers, who opened with a 2-1 win over Seton Hall last Saturday.
Princeton hosts Dartmouth Saturday, Sept. 21, in its home opener.
