Philadelphia, Pa. - Junior Marty Shaw cut the Drexel lead to one goal with 17 minutes left in regulation, but it wasn't enough to overcome a 23-second Princeton lapse in which the Dragons scored two goals on the Tiger defense on the way to a 3-2 win at the Penn/Kappa Classic on Friday afternoon in Philadelphia, Pa. The Dragons extended their win streak to five games and Princeton fell for the first time this season.
Justin Sandler scored in the game's 12th minute to give Drexel the early 1-0 lead. The score stayed that way at the half and until freshman Sean Paylor answered with his first career goal. Paylor scored off an assist from sophomore Adrian Melville and at 59:13 the game was nodded at 1-1. It was in the 62nd minute that things fell apart for Princeton. After Jeff Parke's header to give Drexel the lead at 61:29, Derek Bickford scored at 61:52 and the Tigers found themselves in a two-goal hole. Shaw found the back of the goal at 73:05, but it was all Princeton could muster on this afternoon at Rhodes Field.
The Tigers racked up 13 shots to Drexel's 12 and finished with eight corner kicks while the Dragons finished with five. Senior goalkeeper Jason White registered five saves for the Tigers. Princeton falls to 0-1-2 and Drexel, enjoying its longest winning streak since 1998, improves to 5-1 overall.
Princeton has now had five different players score goals in its first three games. No Tiger has more than one goal or one assist this season. Play at the Penn/Kappa Classic continues this Sunday, Sept. 22 when Princeton plays La Salle at noon. The Princeton-La Salle game will be played at Rhodes Field.
