Lawrenceville, N.J. - Five games into the season and the Princeton men's soccer team has already played in four double-overtime contests. The latest ended in a 3-2 loss at Rider on Wednesday evening after 105:55 minutes of play.
Junior Vincent Vitale scored his first collegiate goal when he misdirected a shot taken by freshman teammate Sean Paylor. The Tigers led 1-0 and kept that lead into the locker room at halftime. The Broncs, however, responded quickly in the second half, scoring only 15 seconds into the period on Jake Trainor's fist goal of the season.
Princeton took the lead once again on Teddy van Beuren's goal with 5:39 remaining in regulation. Rider bounced back with another quick response and a goal at 86:34 to send the game into overtime.
Senior goalkeeper Jason White made two saves in the first overtime period to keep the game nodded at 2-2 after 100 minutes of play. White finished with four saves on the day. The Broncs ended White's day 5:55 into the second overtime period when Sean O'Hare scored his team-high third goal of the season, lifting Rider to 2-3-1 on the year.
The Tigers, now 1-2-2, have had eight different players score each of this season's eight goals. Rider's win is its first over Princeton since 1997 and only the third victory in 18 meetings.
