South Orange, N.J. - Krista Ariss' goal midway through the second half snapped a tie game and led the 21st-ranked Princeton women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Seton Hall Saturday afternoon.
The victory came in the first intercollegiate event of the 2002-03 academic year for a Princeton team.
Princeton, looking for a fourth-straight NCAA tournament appearance for the first time in the program's history, returns eight starters from last year's 14-3-2 squad. The Tigers open their quest for a third-straight Ivy title next Saturday at Yale.
Princeton scored first against Seton Hall when sophomore Esmerelda Negron converted a low drive off the post and into the net at the 9"15 mark. Seton Hall tied it on an Anne Sauer goal in the 34th minute to make it a 1-1 halftime game.
Arris, a senior who was a first-team All-Ivy pick a year ago, put the Tigers back on top when she scored on a give-and-go from freshman Maura Gallagher at the 68:40 mark.
Jean Poster, a junior who had played 104 career minutes prior to this season, went all the way in goal for the Tigers in her first start. Poster made three saves. Princeton outshot Seton Hall (2-2) 20-7.
