HANOVER, N.H. - Freshman Kyle McHugh scored his second goal of the game on a left-footed shot in the first overtime to lead Princeton past Dartmouth, 3-2, in the Ivy League opener for both teams.
The win improves the Tigers to 3-2-2 overall and and was an upset according to the numbers. Dartmouth (4-2-2) was undefeated in the first six games of its 2003 season until a 2-1 loss to New Hampshire last Wednesday. The Big Green led the Ivy League in every offensive category and was ranked No. 25 in the NSCAA national poll last week but Princeton head coach Jim Barlow entered today's game with confidence.
"Any of the Ivy teams can win the league this year," Barlow said after Princeton's 1-1 tie with Seton Hall last Wednesday.
Senior defender Jeff Hare headed in his first goal of the season and McHugh scored his first collegiate goal with a right-footed shot into the lower right corner to tie the score at 2-2 at the end of regulation.
Neither Princeton nor Dartmouth had scored in overtime this season, but the Tigers broke that streak with McHugh's unassisted game winner in the first overtime.
The Tigers return home on Wednesday for an 7:30 p.m. matchup with Adelphi.
