PRINCETON, N.J. - Gianfranco Tripicchio set up Jame Wunsch for a header in the 89th minute to lead Princeton past Adelphi, 2-1, at Lourie-Love Field. The Tigers dominated offensively, outshooting the Panthers 13 to four, taking nine more corner kicks and leading 1-0 for most of the game.
"We created some great scoring opportunities," head coach Jim Barlow said. "We were unlucky to not be ahead by more than one goal."
Princeton scored first in the 18th minute when Ryan Rich connected on a cross by Wunsch. The Tigers took seven corner kicks in the first half but scored on none, as Adelphi defender Gary Sullivan won most balls in the air. Jeff Hare managed two shots on goal, one which skimmed the top post and another that went straight into the arms of Panther goalkeeper Tom Cunningham. The Tigers held on to their 1-0 lead until 9:28 remained in regulation. Adelphi's Joseph Afful, who has a team-high four goals, found a rebound and slipped it past Princeton goalkeeper Erik White to tie the score at 1-1.
Late goals have hurt the Tigers before but Princeton proved it learned its lesson and came alive in the final few minutes. A free kick in the final minute of regulation let Tripicchio perfectly set up Wunsch for the game-winning header at 89:13.
"I'm proud of the way our guys stayed in the game," Barlow said. "But we still need to stop giving up late goals."
Princeton improved to 4-2-2 as it nears the halfway point of the 2003 season. The Tigers are on the road this Saturday for a 4 p.m. Ivy League game with Brown. They return to Lourie-Love the follwing weekend when they host Columbia on Oct. 18 at 7:30 p.m.
