PRINCETON, N.J. - Princeton jumped out to a 21-4 lead and then held off a furious rally to defeat the Jackrabbits of South Dakota State 24-18 Thursday night in the season opener for the wrestling team. Jack Fleming won the decisive final match to give Princeton the win.
After the two teams split the opening matches, Princeton strung together an 18-point run to gain a major lead. The streak started with senior heavyweight Joe Looke, who trailed 7-1 after one period but rallied to pin Craig Martinmaas for a 9-4 Tiger lead. Kenny Chu won a match by forfeit, and senior Brian Kirschbaum dominated his first period before finally pinning Jarrod Chapa in 2:54. With no margin for error, South Dakota State began its rally with a 3-1 win by Lenny Tol at 141 pounds. After a technical fall by Jeremy Roe, teammate Joe Kenton swung the momentum firmly on the visitor's side with a late escape/takedown to earn a 5-4 win over junior Charlie Wiggins at 157 pounds.
A win at 165 pounds got South Dakota State to within 21-18 with one match remaining, but Fleming was up to the challenge. A takedown combined with back point gave Fleming an early edge over Travis Gottschalk, and he rode that advantage to a 9-4 win.
Princeton will wrestle in the East Stroudsburg Tournament on Saturday.
