Ithaca, N.Y. - The Princeton men's swimming and diving teams got the 2003-04 season off on the right foot, earning convincing wins against Cornell and Penn Saturday morning at the Ithaca Aquatics Club. The Tigers earned a 175-66 win against the Big Red and topped the Quakers 187-56.
Princeton's 400 yard medley relay started the day by setting a pool record. The team of Steve Fleming, Evan Delaney, Mike Zee and Mike Salerno completed the race in 3:24.13. In event 2, Princeton's Juan Valdivieso won the 1000 yard freestyle in 9:29.00, four seconds ahead of teammate David Ashley. Justin Chiles swam 1:41.31 to finish first in the 200 yard freestyle and Zee won the 200 yard IM with a time of 1:53.13. Valdivieso won his second event of the day in the 200 yeard butterfly, setting a pool record at 1:49.18. Not to be outdone, Chiles won his second event of the day in Event 8, the 100 yard freestyle, which he swam in 46.58.
Fleming won the 200 yard backstroke, and Valdivieso won his third event, the 500 freestyle. Princeton closed the day with wins in the 200 yard backstroke by Evan Delaney, and the 400 yard freestyle relay by the team of Zee, Salerno, Jeremy Tillman and Chiles.
In the diving events, Nick Lee won the 1-meter event with a score of 264.45, and he finished second in the 3-meter, just behind Cornell's Like Baer.
Princeton completes its weekend tomorrow at Brown.
