Princeton, N.J. - After three straight losses, the Princeton Tigers travel to Hofstra where a win is critical to get on track for the winter stretch. A victory against the Pride requires less turnovers than their previous game and better defense against a Hofstra offense that is just starting to come alive.
The Tigers and the Pride tip off this Saturday, Dec. 13 at 1:37 p.m. in the Hofstra University Arena. The game will be shown on Fox Sports New York and can be heard on both Hofstra and Princeton's official radio stations.
Although Hofstra enters the game at just 2-4, it comes off an upset win over Rhode Island on Tuesday when the Pride shot 52 percent from the field and 87 percent from the foul line.
The Tigers, who impressed themselves and fans alike in their early-season trips to Nebraska and Vanderbilt, come off a season-worst performance at Sacred Heart in which 31 turnovers and 0-for-8 three-point shooting resulted in a 71-47 loss to the Pioneers. With the Ivy League season less than a month away, head coach Richard Barron and the Princeton women realize the importance of getting on track immediately. A win at Hofstra will help the Tigers gain the confidence necessary for their three-game homestand next week before the Christmas break.
Freshman Katy Digovich leads Princeton with 13.6 points per game after scoring in double figures for the first four games. Becky Brown has played better with each game this season, scoring seven points in the opener and now averaging 12.6 points per game, good for second on the team. Freshman Casey Lockwood, who started her career with a team-high 20 points and eight rebounds, is currently averaging 12.0 points and a team-best 8.2 rebounds per game. Sophomore point guard Katy O'Brien has dished out 21 assists and adds 5.2 points per game, including 6-for-13 shooting behind the arc.
For the Pride, Amaka Agugua and Cigi McCollin average in double figures with 15.0 and 11.3 points per game. Agugua has a team-high 8.5 rebounds per game while Staceyann Claxton has 32 assists, 17 more than any of her teammates. Agugua has led the Pride in scoring in the last four games and poured in 20 or more points in the last three. She has also been the leading rebounder in four games.
Hoftstra opened its season with a 92-45 loss to nationally-ranked North Carolina before defeating Quinnipiac 65-62 in its home-opener. The Pride then lost three straight to Binghamton, Canisius and Columbia. Hofstra fell 76-62 to Columbia, who was picked to finish fifth in the eight-team Ivy League.
