PRINCETON, N.J. - Juan Valdivieso won the 500 free, while both the 200 freestyle medley relay and the 400 medley relay won events, as the Princeton men's swimming and diving team jumped out on the first night of the Princeton Inviatational. The women swam well, but Cal-Berkeley and three-time NCAA Swimmer of the Year Natalie Coughlin were too good on Day One.
Valdivieso won his event in a time of 4:28.43, while the 200 freestyle win in 1:22.18. The 400 medley team won in 3:22.25, while the 'B' team placed second in a time of 3:24.40. Will Reinhardt placed third in the 50 freestyle in a time of 20.84, while Milo Zee placed second in the 200 IM in a time of 1:52.15.
Zee's race in the 200 IM followed an amazing performance by Coughlin, who shattered a DeNunzio Pool record in the same event. Brown's Judy Koostra set the mark in 1999 with a time of 1:59.81, but Coughlin topped that by more than four seconds and won the event in a time of 1:55.46, nearly seven seconds faster than anybody else. Princeton's Stephanie Hsiao placed fourth in 2:05.11. The women's best finish came from the 200 freestyle relay team, placing third in a time of 1:34.80. Cal-Berkeley won that event in 1:33.43, while it set another DeNunzio record in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:42.34, another race Coughlin completed in.
Sarah Fraumann (4:47.34) placed fifth in the 500 freestyle, while Amy Jones (24.03) placed fourth in 24.03.
Day two preliminaries will begin Saturday at 11 a.m., with the finals beginning at 7 p.m.
