PRINCETON, N.J. - Adele McCarthy-Beauvais scored the only goal of the fourth period to lead the Princeton women's water polo team to a 6-5 season-opening win over Brown Saturday morning at Denunzio Pool in the Princeton Invitational. Sophomore Madeline McCarthy made a number of big saves late, including one at point-blank range, to give McCarthy-Beauvais the chance to score the game winner.
Brown started quickly, scoring three of the game's first four goals to open a lead after one quarter. Courtney Mee scored Princeton's lone goal of the first period. A goal by Megan Donaue in the second quarter got it to 4-2 by halftime, but Princeton turned up the defensive pressure in the third quarter and got three of four goals. Joanna Armstrong and Keala Carter joined McCarthy-Beauvais in the scoring column during the period, which ended in a 5-5 tie. A tight fourth period saw both teams miss scoring opportunities, including a late one by Brown after a turnover in its own end by Princeton. McCarthy made a strong play, blocking the close shot with her right arm to keep it even. She added a save on the next Brown possession, give Princeton a shot at the lead with less than one minute remaining. The offense moved the ball into McCarthy-Beauvais, who turned and fired the game winner into the right corner of the goal. Brown couldn't get a shot off on its final possession and Princeton held on for the win.
"It was an exciting start to the season," assistant coach Serela Kay said. "We started the first half slow, but we brought the fire in the second half and did not back down. Brown is a fierce team and we matched up well with them. The team showed a lot of character by coming out of this game with the win."
Princeton will play four games at the Princeton Invitational, including a 7:30 contest against Arizona State on Saturday night. The Tigers will face UCSB (11:30) and George Washington (4:40) on Sunday.
