Box Score
Cornell, the nation's second-ranked team, jumped out to a two-goal lead early in the second period and held on to edge the Princeton men's hockey team 2-1 Friday night in front of 2,501 at Baker Rink. Princeton drew within a goal late in the second when Neil Stevenson-Moore scored his seventh goal of the season, but was unable to draw even despite outshooting the Big Red 24-18.
Cornell scored the games first two goals, scoring late in the first period and early in the second period. The first goal came on the power play with 22 seconds remaining in the first period. Mark McRae won an offensive zone face-off back to Stephen Baby. Baby fed Doug Murray on the point. Murray then took a slap shot that found a hole as Princeton goaltender Eric Leroux was sliding across the crease. Cornell extended its lead to two goals at 2:36 of the second period. There was break down in front of the Tiger net and the Big Red had four or five chances in front. Eventually Daniel Pegoraro found a rebound and beat Leroux. Greg Hornby and Mike Knoepfli added assists.
The score stayed at 2-0 until the 17:27 mark when Princeton got on the board. With Princeton on the power play, a Cornell defenseman attempted to knock clear the puck the length of the ice. Stevenson-Moore deflected the clearing attempt to Seamus Young on the blueline. Young then rifled a shot on goal that caught the far post and bounced to Stevenson-Moore on the off-wing. Stevenson-Moore blasted a shot for his seventh of the year.
Neither team was able to score in the third period, although Princeton outshot Cornell 9-5. Princeton's best chance to even the score came with just under four minutes remaining when Mark Masters had a partial breakaway that was stopped by Cornell goaltender David LeNeveu.
Leroux played a very strong game for Princeton, stopping 16 shots, seven of which came on the power play.
Princeton wraps up the regular season tomorrow night against Colgate at 7 p.m.
