Princeton, N.J. - The Princeton University women's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak with a come-from-behind win over Cornell on Saturday night at Jadwin Gym. The Tigers rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit to win their seventh game of the season, much to the delight of 2,972 screaming fans on National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
Kelly Schaeffer scored 22 points to lead all scorers. Rebecca Brown finished with 18 points and eight rebounds and Princeton shot 50.9 percent from the field as a team. The Tigers still found themselves down by 11 at halftime despite the better shooting percentage.
The second half would be close with Cornell holding a slight advantage the first 17 minutes of play. Princeton took its first lead of the game when Brown rolled off a give-and-go screen from Katy O'Brien and connected with a lay-in, putting the Tigers up 61-59 with 2:16 left in regulation. Schaeffer proceeded to hit a big shot the next possession to give Princeton a four-point cushion with about a minute left to play. Senior Allison Cahill scored seven points and had a team-high four assists.
Cornell's Karen Force and Lynell Davis each scored 12 points and Dani Aretino pulled down 14 rebounds. The Big Red fall to 7-12 overall and 1-5 in the Ivy League. Princeton is also 7-12 overall, but the Tigers are 2-3 in the conference.
The crown of 2,972 was the second-largest ever to watch a Princeton women's basketball game at Jadwin Gym. The game followed the 17th annual celebration of National Girls and Women In Sports Day. Established by Congress in 1987, it calls for attention to the positive influence of sports and fitness participation and seeks to advance the struggle for equality and access for women in sports.
Princeton is on the road next weekend with a pair of games versus Brown and Yale. The Tigers face Brown on Friday night and Yale on Saturday. Both games are 7 p.m.
