Buies Creek, N.C. - The Princeton baseball team dropped both ends of a double header Monday, falling to NC State 13-5 in the afternoon and dropping a 14-0 decision to Campbell in the nightcap. The Tigers continue their spring break road trip tomorrow afternoon at North Carolina.
NC State used a five-run sixth inning to pull away from Princeton and earn a 13-5 win in the first game. The two teams met at Campbell University in a make-up game for Princeton's rained-out game with UNC-Wilmington that had been scheduled for Sunday.
NC State jumped ahead to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Tigers erased the deficit, knotting the game at one in the top of the third. Steve Young singled to left field and advanced to second on a fielding error. The next batter B.J. Szymanski singled to left field to score Young. The Wolfpack reassumed the lead in the bottom of the fourth with a five-run inning to make the score 6-1. Princeton gained one of the runs back in its next at-bat when Adam Balkan led off with a double down the left-field line and Young followed it up with a single down the right-field line to score Balkan.
The Tigers continued to fight back and scored three runs in the next inning to move within a run at 6-5. Ryan Eldridge began the inning drawing a walk and advanced to second when Ryan Reich was a hit by a pitch. Eldridge and Reich both advanced a base on a passed ball and scored on Mike Chernoff's two-RBI single up the middle. Balkan then hit a triple to score Chernoff.
That was as close as Princeton would get as the Wolfpack scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth and added two more in the seventh to put the game out of reach. Tiger starting pitcher Jason Vaughan pitched three innings and gave up six runs on six hits in the loss. Nate Miller, Aaron Herr and Worth Lumry each appeared in relief. David Hicks earned the win for NC State.
In the day's second game, Campell got to Princeton starting pitcher Brian Biegen with three runs in the first and third innings to take control of the game. Complete details of the Campbell game will be available on Tuesday morning.
