CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Kristin Del Calvo totaled four hits and three runs as Princeton split a doubleheader with the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga and earned its first win of the season with a 4-1 finish in the second game.
"After losing the first game, we went out stronger and more focused in the second.," senior Erin Valocsik said. "We wanted it more."
In the first game, Erin Snyder struck out seven Lady Mocs through six scoreless innings before Princeton fell to UTC 2-1 at Frost Stadium.
The freshman pitcher had a no-hitter going until the fourth inning when Bryn Favor singled into left field. Then with one out and runners on second and third, Snyder struck out two straight batters to keep the Lady Mocs scoreless. With the game tied at 0-0 heading into the seventh, Valocsik singled and stole second before Wendy Bingham ripped into right field for an RBI and the first run of the night.
The Lady Mocs loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh and a bunt by Teri Herbert scored Jennifer Reed and tied the score, 1-1. The next batter, second baseman Grace Pickett, hit a sacrifice fly to left field that sent Paige Cochrane home and ended the game, 2-1 in favor of UTC.
Melissa Finley sparked the Tigers in the second game with a double that scored Del Calvo, who walked onto base, in the top of the first. Princeton's defense allowed a UTC run when three walks and an error scored Pickett, but the Tigers quickly regained the lead as Snyder hit her first collegiate homer in the second inning.
"With two strikes against me, I wasn't expecting it," Snyder said of her homerun. "And I didn't think I'd be the first on the team to hit one this season. It felt good."
In the third, Del Calvo doubled into right field and a Cobb-Adams single sent her home to increase the Tigers' lead to 3-1.
Del Calvo notched her second hit of the game with a single down the left field line in the top of the fifth. A sacrifice fly by Snyder scored her for the Tigers' fourth and final run.
Princeton advanced to a 1-3 record and will play again tomorrow, March 19, at 5:00 p.m. when they travel to Georgia State.
