Los Angeles - The Princeton women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to Loyola Marymount Thrsday afternoon at the LMU Tennis Center. Tied at 3-3 with a match to go, the Lions won a three-set match at No. 6 to earn the win and drop the Tigers to 4-3 this spring and 7-6 overall.
The hint that it would be a long day came early as the doubles matches last over two hours. Princeton's of Stephanie Burg and Alex Kobishyn claimed the first victory of the day, 8-3, over the Lion's No.3 doubles team of Georgina Dinham and Jennifer Baker. Things became intense at the No.1 and 2 doubles with both matches going to the tiebreaker. LMU's No.2 team of Edit Pakay and Diana Vinis put the Lions back in the hunt for the doubles point with a 9-8 (8-6) win over Avantika Bhargava and Mateya McCoy. With the doubles point riding on the outcome of the No.1 singles, the teams did not disappoint. In a tough match, Kavitha Krishnamurthy and Susan Meng pulled off a 9-8 (8-6) win over LMU's Lions Penka Fileva and Patrycia Hubl. The singles play brought more of the same hard fought action by both teams. Fileva, Vinis and Baker gave the Lions their first three points all with straight set wins. Fileva downed Alison Hashmall, 6-2, 6-1 at the No.2 spot, while Vinis downed Jessica Siebel, 7-5, 6-2 at No.4. Baker's win came at the No.5 spot, 6-2, 6-2, over McCoy. Princeton pulled out a couple of straight set wins as well to tie things at 3-3. Krishnamurthy defeated Pakay, 6-3, 6-3 at No.1 and Berg downed Dinham by the same score at the No.3 spot.
With the score knotted, the hopes of a win by either team came down to the No.6 singles played by Hubl and Bhargava. Hubl made quick work of the first set taking the advantage 6-2. Bhargava came back though to split things at one set each with a 6-2 win in the second set. Both struggled to find the energy to play the third set, but one would have never guessed watching it. After matching each other nearly point for point in the final set, Hubl held on and outlasted Bhargava 7-5 for the win and match.
