Princeton, N.J. - Junior Theresa Sherry scored four goals and senior Alex Fiore added two as Princeton defeated Penn State by a 10-7 score on Saturday afternoon at Class of 1952 Stadium. The Tigers snapped a three-game skid with a huge advantage in ground balls and caused turnovers and improve to 2-3 on the year.
Sherry was on fire early, scoring two goals within the game's first five minutes to put Princeton up 2-0. Fiore kept pace with a goal at 10:38 and senior Whitney Miller, who was leading the team in scoring entering today, scored her eight goal of the season to give the Tigers a 4-0 advantage.
"My goal today was just to work hard at both ends of the field," says Sherry. "I had talked to coach [Chris Sailer] about making big plays and that was what I was focused on." Sherry gave Princeton a 5-0 lead with her third goal of game. The Nittany Lions, however, responded with two goals before the half and the score at intermission was 5-2.
Fiore, who scored two goals and notched two assists, scored her second goal of the game in the first few minutes of the second half. After a Penn State goal to answer Fiore, sophomore Elizabeth Pillion took a pass from senior Sarah Small and punched in her third goal of the season. Junior Katie Yakulis scored 51 seconds later and Princeton was in control with an 8-3 lead.
Shari Maslin and Colleen O'Hara scored back-to-back goals for Penn State to cut the lead to 8-5, but that was as close at the Lions would get. Pillion scored her second goal of the game and Sherry put the game away with her team-high 10th goal of the season.
"We just had that spark today," says Sherry. "Nothing was going to get us down or get in our way of a victory."
Sherry becomes Princeton's first player this season to score at least four goals in a game. She leads the Tigers with 11 points. Fiore, who is second on the team in scoring with 10 points, has eight goals in five games. Fiore entered this season with 15 goals in her first three years.
Penn State, ranked No. 11 in this week's IWLCA poll, falls to 3-3 on the season. Princeton looks for its first winning streak of 2003 when it hosts Columbia on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. That game can be heard live on www.GoPrincetonTigers.com.
