Tiger Relays Swim Well On Day One Of NCAA Championships

Austin, Texas - Day One of the 2003 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships saw two Princeton relay teams place while senior Jesse Gage swam the 50-yard freestyle. The Tigers competed in three of Day One's six events and hold 16th place with 26 team points.
The 200-yard freestyle relay team opened the night's finals with Princeton's foursome of Gage, Carl Hessler, Mike Salerno and Jamie Leahy tapping in at 1:20.14. The Tigers placed 11th overall while Stanford won with a time of 1:16.85
Princeton's 400-yard medley relay team consisting of Pat Donohue, Gage, Garth Fealey and Hessler finished 10th in 3:13.67, a time only 0.04 seconds off the school record. Texas' squad took the event with an NCAA record time of 3:04.47.
Gage was Princeton's lone individual competitor on Day One and he placed 21st in the 50-yard freestyle. His time was 19.87 while eventual champion Fred Bousquet of Auburn swam a 19.31.
The 2003 championships continue with Day Two on Friday in Austin, Texas. The Tigers will compete in six events, including two more relays. The championships conclude on Saturday.
