Fealey Scores In 100-Yard Breaststroke As Tigers Continue Competition At NCAA Championships

Austin, Texas - Garth Fealey became Princeton's first individual to score points at the 2003 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships with his consolation final in the 100-yard breaststroke on Day Two of competition in Austin, Texas.
Fealey swam a 54.82 after his morning prelim time of 54.29 and took 16th place in the final. Texas' own Brendan Hansen won the race with an NCAA record-breaking performance. Hansen finished in 51.96 to mark the second NCAA record to fall of the night.
The first record to fall was also at the hands of the host Longhorns. Texas won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:24.46 while Princeton placed 12th in 1:29.00. Pat Donohue, Fealey, Jamie Leahy and Jesse Gage swam to Princeton's best finish of the night.
Donohue also swam on Princeton's 800-yard freestyle relay team. He was joined by Carl Hessler, Mike Salerno and Stephen Flemming and helped Princeton to a 17th-place showing. The relay posted a time of 6:39.60.
As individuals, Gage placed 21st in the 100-yard butterfly in 47.70, Donohue was 34th in the 100-yard backstroke (49.68), Hessler placed 23rd in the 200-yard freestyle (1:37.35) while Salerno was 45th (1:41.27) in the event.
Auburn, Texas, Stanford, California and USC round out the top-5 after two days of competition. The Tigers are 19th in team scoring with 37 total points. Harvard, the only other Ivy school to register a point, is 36th after Friday's finals.
The third and final day of competition is Saturday with Princeton having its 400-yard freestyle relay team along with Gage, Hessler, Fealey, Salerno, Donohue and Flemming all competing as individuals.
