Uniondale, N.Y. - Princeton rallied from a 100-point deficit after Day 1 to take an 11-point lead over Harvard after two days of the Ivy League men's swimming and diving championships.
The event concludes Saturday with seven of the 21 events remaining. Princeton ended Harvard's six-year championship run a year ago.
Princeton won the first event of the night in meet-record time, winning the medley relay of Stephen Fleming, Garth Fealey, Jesse Gage and Jeremy Tillman finished first in 1:30.33 seconds.
The amazing run of Gage continued in the 100 fly, which he won in a meet-record 47.10, also an automatic NCAA qualifying cut. For Gage, it was his second individual win of the meet, and both times were meet records.
Princeton's Carl Hessler took the 200 free in 1:36.89 and helped draw Princeton to within 60 points in the team race. The Tigers cut the lead to 12 points as Fealey won the 100 breast, breaking his own meet record with a time of 54.02. That was an automatic NCAA cut as well.
Princeton's Pat Donohue took gold in the 100 back with a time of 48.84 to give the Tigers a three-point lead in the overall standings. The final event-the 800 free relay--went to the Princeton quartet of Justin Chiles, Juan Valdivieso, Mike Salerno and Hessler.
Saturday morning's session begins at 11:00 and features prelims in the 200 back, the 100 free, the 200 breast, the 200 fly and the 1650 free (all but fastest heat). The evening program features the fast heat of the 1650, the 3-meter diving final and the 400 free relay.
Princeton has 1,051 points, followed by Harvard with 1,040. Yale is in third, with 686.
