Richmond, Va. - With its own field still covered with snow, Princeton's baseball team ventured south to open its season against Richmond. Getting outside for the first time since practice began in February, Princeton was swept in a doubleheader, falling 3-1 in the first game and 12-1 in the second game.
The teams will meet in another doubleheader Sunday. Princeton will then be off until beginning its spring break trip in North Carolina Friday.
Due to the severe winter weather, Princeton's entire preseason practice was held in "The Pit," a dirt infield with several pitchers' mounds five floors below the main court in Jadwin Gym.
Ryan Qullian, the Ivy League Pitcher of the Year two years ago, pitched five solid innings in the opener, allowing one earned run and four hits. Princeton trailed 3-0 after eight nearly perfect innings from Tim Stauffer, who improved to 2-0 after allowing just two hits with 15 strikeouts and one walk. Finally rid of Stauffer in the ninth, Princeton picked up an RBI single from Ryan Reich.
A.J. Board, who homered in the first game, hit a three-run shot in a seven-run fifth as Richmond won the seven-inning second game easily. Princeton's run came when Mike Chernoff scored on an error in the third inning to make it 2-1, but the Spiders scored twice in the third and then seven more times during the decisive fifth.
B.J. Symanski, Princeton's standout wide receiver in football, started Game 2 in centerfield and went 0 for 3 in his first college baseball game.
David Boehle picked up the loss in Game 2.
Richmond is 8-1.
