Uniondale, N.Y. - Harvard's Ricky Roy won the three-meter diving, the 20th of 21 events, to clinch the Ivy League men's swimming championship for the Crimson.
Harvard has won seven of the last eight titles, with the only loss coming a year ago when Princeton won. Harvard regained the title this year on a dramatic last-day , outdistancing Princeton 1,592 to 1,565, with no other team within 600 points of the Crimson. Either Princeton or Harvard won each of the seven events contested Saturday night.
The Tigers entered the last day with a slight 11-point lead, but the Crimson got off to a fast start with wins by John Cole in the 1,650 freestyle and a 1-3 finish by Dan Shevchik and Dave Cromwell in the 200 backstroke.
Princeton stormed back to win the next three events, as Jesse Gage (100 free), Garth Fealey (200 breast) and Carl Hessler (200 butterfly) all touched first. Still, Harvard was able to maintain its lead with several high placings, including four in the top six in the 200 breast.
Roy's win in the diving gave the Crimson a basically insurmountable lead, and the rivals then finished 1-2 in the final event, the 400 free relay, which Princeton won with Gage, Mike Salerno, Justin Chiles and Hessler touching in a meet-record 2:56.56.
