Box Score
The Princeton baseball team completed its weekend series at No. 10 Richmond this afternoon, dropping both ends of the double header for the second consecutive day. Steve Young had three hits and an RBI for Princeton in a 6-1 loss in the day's first game, while B.J. Szymanski notched two hits in a 4-1 loss in the second game.
In the first game, the 10th-ranked Spiders broke through with two runs in both the third and fourth innings to establish a 4-0 lead against starting pitcher and last season's Ivy League rookie of the year Ross Ohlendorf. Richmond also added two runs in the eighth inning before Princeton was able to add a run in the top of the ninth inning. Princeton's lone run in the game came from Szymanski. With one out in the ninth, he singled up the middle. He advanced to second base in a wild pitch and made it to third on a fielder's choice. Szymanski made it home when Young singled to left center for his third hit of the game. Richmond's Mike McGirr pitched a complete game to improve to 3-0, while Ohlendorf took the loss. In the second game, Richmond used a four-run fifth inning to put the game out of reach. Princeton freshman pitcher Erik Stiller made his first career start and pitched four innings of one hit ball and collected five strikeouts. The Tigers were able to get one run back in the top of the sixth. Jon Miller doubled down the left field line and was batted home when Andy Salini singled to left field. Richmond's Jason Bolinski pitched a complete game win for the Spiders. For Princeton, the loss was credited to reliever Brian Kappel.
Princeton is now 0-4 and resumes play next Friday when the Tigers meet UNC-Wilmington and Old Dominion in games played at N.C. State.
