PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Cristina Cobb-Adams hit a two-run double in the fifth inning of Game 1 to lead Princeton to a 2-0 win over Brown in Providence. The Tigers battled Brown to a 5-5 tie in eight-and-a-half innings of the second game before the game was called due to darkness.
In the first game, Erin Snyder pitched a two-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts. Brown pitcher Uchenna Omokaro struck out six Tigers but Kristin Lueke had a field day with her left-handed slap hits and bunts. After a successful bunt put her on first, catcher Ty Ries singled straight up the middle and Wendy Bingham reached first on a fielder's choice put Ries out at second. Cobb-Adams' double to leftfield brought home Lueke and Bingham, and proved to be the game-winning hit as the Tigers held on for the 2-0 shutout. Cobb-Adams finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Melissa Finley went 2 for 3, with one intentional walk.
Princeton dominated most of the second game after scoring four runs in the opening frame. Lueke got on with another bunt, Bingham singled to the pitcher, and Finley was walked to load the bases. Snyder then connected for a double that scored three before Ries' single to first base brought Snyder home.
The Bears rallied in the third with two runs off three hits but Princeton scored again in the fifth. Lueke singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Bingham, and stole third before Finley's grounder past the shortstop brought her home and upped the Tigers' lead to 5-2.
Brown recorded a trio of runs in the bottom of the fifth before Snyder took over at the mound and struck out seven batters in the next three innings. The game remained at a 5-5 throughout eight innings, at which point the umpires allowed another half-inning before calling the game due to darkness.
Princeton scored two runs in the ninth but the inning was ruled unofficial because it was incomplete. The game does not count as a win or tie on the Tigers' record, and will only be finished if deemed necessary for standings by the Ivy League office.
Princeton is now 13-10-1 and 5-0 in the Ivy League. The Tigers host Lehigh in a doubleheader tomorrow, Wednesday, April 16 at 3 p.m.
