College Park, Md. - Whitney Miller scored five goals and Sarah Kolodner made 10 saves as Princeton rolled into College Park and shocked No. 2 Maryland 13-6 on Wednesday night. The Tigers won in convincing fashion, outscoring the Terps 8-1 over the final 28 mintues of the game. Princeton, ranked No. 6 in the nation entering this week, improves to 11-4 overall.
Defense set the tone in the first half and with 10 minutes elapsed the game was still scoreless. Maryland finally cracked the scoreboard with Annie Collins scoring an unassisted goal at 11:27. The Tigers answered 51 seconds later with Leigh Slonaker's 19th goal of the season. The Terps went back on top with a goal by Jessica Dorney, but a 4-0 Princeton run, capped by back-to-back goals by Lindsey Biles, had the Tigers up 5-2 with six minutes left in the first half. Maryland closed out the period with two goals and despite winning seven of 10 draw controls and five saves from Kolodner, Princeton only held a one-goal advantage at halftime. The Terrapins quickly turned that into no advantage with Kelly Coppedge scoring her second goal of the night 37 seconds into the second half.
The Tigers won the next two draw controls and converted both into goals. First Slonaker connected off a feed from Elizabeth Pillion and then junior Theresa Sherry slipped past her defender and notched her 100th career goal. Miller, who scored back-to-back goal in the first half, provided an encore performance in the second half with two straight goals and the Tigers extended their lead to 9-5. Pillion scored the next two for Princeton and Miller closed the night with her fifth goal of the game.
"We had a game plan, we stuck with it, and we ran the best offense we've run all year," Miller said. "This is the best game we've ever played on this field."
Biles, Slonaker and Pillion all finished with two goals, Alex Fiore added one in the win. The Tigers racked up 22 ground balls and caused eight turnovers and dominated possession for most of the game. Maryland drops to 16-2 overall and closes out the season with current No.1 Loyola on Saturday.
The Tigers have now won four straight and wrap up the regular season with Brown at home on Saturday at 3 p.m. Princeton will play in Game Two of a double-header with the men and both games can be heard live on WBUD AM 1260 beginning with the men at noon.
