Princeton, N.J. - Princeton tennis senior's Trevor Smith and Kavitha Krishnamurthy were both honored today with awards from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Smith was the men's northeast region winner of the ITA/Arthur Ashe Jr., Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship, while Krishnamurthy was named the women's east region ITA Senior Player of the Year.
The regional award winners are eligible for the national award. The women's national winners will be announced May 18 in Gainesville, Fla., and the men's will be announced May 21 in Athens, Ga.
Smith was Princeton's only other senior this year and received the Arthur Ashe Award. The ITA/Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship goes to a player who has exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.
For Krishnamurthy, Princeton's No. 1 women's player for the past four seasons, the award bookends a tremendous career as she was named the ITA Rookie Player of the Year as a freshman. She was also named the Ivy League Rookie and Player of the Year in her first season as a Tiger, and is one of only two Ivy League athletes ever to achieve that status. Following her graduation this spring, she will turn pro and join the Women's Tennis Association Tour.
