PRINCETON, N.J. - Princeton University and the University of San Diego will play a pair of football games, beginning in the 2004 season, it was announced today by both universities. The Tigers will discontinue its series with Lehigh for two years and will begin the home-and-home series at San Diego on Sept. 25, 2004.
"Entering this contractual agreement in the sport of football with the University of San Diego provides two significant opportunities for our department," senior associate athletic director Jim Fiore said. "Competing against the University of San Diego invigorates our football schedule with a new quality opponent, while providing a tremendous opportunity for our student-athletes and large alumni base on the west coast to experience first-hand another positive Princeton experience."
While times for both contests have yet to be officially set, both will be played in the evening. San Diego will travel to Princeton for a contest under the lights at Princeton Stadium on September 24, 2005.
"Both the Directors of Athletics at Lehigh (Joe Sterrett) and Lafayette (Bruce McCutcheon) assisted us in this endeavor by allowing flexibility with future scheduling dates, thus allowing this scheduling opportunity come to fruition," Fiore said.
Princeton will open its 2003 football season under the lights at Princeton Stadium when it takes on Lehigh at 7 p.m. The Tigers are coming off a 6-4 season that included four comeback wins in the fourth quarter. The six wins were the most by a Princeton team since the 1995 team won the Ivy League championship.
