PRINCETON, N.J. - Mary Gleason, a former assistant coach at New York University and standout player at Southern Methodist University, will join the Princeton women's basketball program as an assistant coach under third-year head coach Richard Barron.
Gleason was the recruiting coordinator at NYU, which is a Top 20 Division III program that appeared in one NCAA tournament and won two ECAC Championships during her three years there.
"She is accustomed to recruiting highly motivated academically minded student-athletes," Barron said, "and she has had great success recruiting nationally."
Barron also believes that Gleason's playing experience, both at the collegiate and professional levels, will be an asset to the Princeton program.
"Her success as a player at SMU will go a long way in helping our players understand what it will take to win the Ivy League and go to the NCAA tournament," he said.
Gleason was a walk-on who became the starting point guard and team captain for the winningest class at SMU. She also played professionally in Switzerland and Spain, and was invited for tryouts with the Houston Comets and Detroit Shock WNBA teams.
Gleason replaces Jen Scanlon, who is engaged to be married, and joins Barron and assistant coach Helen Williams on the current Princeton coaching staff.
"I am so pleased with Helen Williams and what she has brought to the program," Barron said. "With the addition of Mary, I feel that we will have wonderful people coaching on the floor, recruiting across the nation, and serving as role models for the young women in our program."
