Princeton To Host Women's Soccer Invitational
September 11, 2003 | Women's Soccer
Sept. 11, 2003
Four teams who are a combined 8-1-1 on the young season converge at Lourie-Love Field this weekend for the Princeton Women's Soccer Invitational.
The weekend features four games, all of which will be first-time matchups. Admission to each game will be free.
The event begins Friday afternoon at 5 with undefeated Saint Louis (3-0) against undefeated Penn (2-0). The second game of the day is at 7:30, when Princeton (1-0) meets UNC Greensboro (2-1-1).
The matchups are reversed Sunday, when Penn meets UNC Greensboro at noon and Princeton takes on Saint Louis at 2:30.
Except for Ivy rivals Princeton and Penn, who met for the first time in 1980, none of the teams have ever faced each other before. Saint Louis has never played a team from the Ivy League.
In addition to the quality teams, there is also the possibility of two big milestones over the weekend. Penn's Katy Cross needs one point to tie the school career record, while Saint Loius' Jamie Perry needs two goals to tie the school career record. The Princeton Invitational:
Hey, strangers - Princeton has never played UNC Greensboro or Saint Louis before. Saint Louis has never played Princeton or Penn (or any Ivy League school) before. UNC Greensboro has never played Princeton or Penn before.
On the other hand - Princeton and Penn first played each other in 1980, the first year of varsity women's soccer at Princeton, and have played each other every year since 1989.
Just win, baby - The four schools competing at Princeton this weekend enter the event a combined 8-1-1.
So far, so perfect - Saint Louis enters the weekend with a record of 3-0-0, having outscored its opponents 8-0.
We're honored - The Princeton Invitational features last year's Ivy League Player of the Year (Penn's Katy Cross) and Rookie of the Year (Princeton's Emily Behncke).
Ice princess - UNC Greensboro's Rakel Logadottir, a native of Hafnarfjordur, Iceland, has scored four of her team's eight goals this season. She was the Southern Conference Player of the Week after UNC Greensboro's opening wins against Old Dominion and UNC Wilmington.
Moving up the charts - Saint Louis junior Jamie Perry has 26 career goals, second-best all-time in school history and two off the school record of 28.
More charts - Penn junior Katy Cross has 67 career points. The school record is 68.
Three-peat - Princeton has won at least a share of the Ivy League championship each of the last three years, including the program's first outright league title a year ago.
Ring 'em up - Two Princeton women's soccer players (Theresa Sherry/Elizabeth Pillion) were All-Americas last spring for the Tigers' NCAA champion women's lacrosse team. Sherry scored the championship-winning goal in overtime to defeat Virginia 8-7.
Class act - Princeton's 4-1 win over American featured a goal by a freshman (Meghan Farrell), a sophomore (Maura Gallagher) a junior (Esmeralda Negron) and a senior (Theresa Sherry).
