Emily Behncke wasn't about to let history repeat itself.
One year after Princeton let a second-half lead get away against Dartmouth, Behncke scored two goals, the second one minute after Dartmouth had scored, to lead 11th-ranked Princeton to a 4-1 win over the Big Green at Lourie-Love Field.
Behncke also assisted on one of Meghan Farrell's two goals in the game to finish the day with a career-best five points.
Princeton improved to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in the Ivy League heading into Tuesday night's game at home against Rutgers. Dartmouth fell to 4-4-1, 1-1 in the league.
"We were focused on this game all week," said Behncke. "We knew how badly they made us feel last year, and we wanted to turn that around this year." In that game a year ago in Hanover, Dartmouth rallied from a 2-1 second-half deficit to tie the game and then win it with a goal with 48 seconds remaining. That win propelled the Big Green to the outright Ivy title, ending Princeton's three-year run of championships.
This time, Dartmouth's Sarah Johnson scored with 12:29 remaining to cut Princeton's lead to 2-1, but Behncke made sure Dartmouth would get no closer when she scored 1:21 after Johnson's goal to make it a two-goal Princeton lead again. Bencke then set up Farrell four minutes later to clinch it.
Farrell, who had three goals and two assists as a freshman last year but had not scored this year through seven game, had started the scoring when she converted a loose ball with 4:16 remaining before halftime. Esmeralda Negron assisted on the goal.
The lead doubled to 2-0 with Behncke's first goal, a breakaway after a perfect long pass from Diana Matheson eight minutes into the second half. Just when it looked like it would be an easy day for the Tigers, though, Dartmouth came back to get on the board.
Dartmouth's goal came after Princeton was called for offsides. Big Green goalkeeper Anne Marbarger knocked the free kick into the Princeton box, where Johnson gained control after a scramble and sent it past Madeleine Jackson. It was the first goal Jackson allowed this season and ended her scoreless streak at 347:31.
Behncke came right back to answer that goal off another assist from Negron and make it 3-1, and she then set up Farrell's second goal.
"Emily was great," said Princeton coach Julie Shackford. "I also thought with the way Dartmouth was playing, Meghan could be successful. It was just a hunch. This is big for us, especialy after what happened last year."
Princeton outshot Dartmouth 16-8. Marbarger made six saves, while Jackson made two for Princeton.
Princeton's Rochelle Willis, who had started every game of her career prior to this season but missed the first six games with a knee injury, made her first appearance of the season.
