Princeton, N.J. - Junior Darren Spicer scored his eighth goal of the season in the 79th minute to lift the Princeton men's soccer team to a 3-2 win over Brown Friday night at Lourie-Love Field. Princeton battled back from deficits of 1-0 and 2-1 in the game to win its fifth game of the season and its first Ivy League game.
After playing two consecutive scoreless ties, the Tigers (5-2-3; 1-0-1 IL) and Bears (4-3-2) accounted for five goals and 21 shots an exciting and offensive game. Brown opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Andrew Daniels redirected a ball off a free kick just inside the far Princeton post.
Princeton had opportunities in the half but was unable to solve Brown goalkeeper Chris Gomez. The Tigers closest chance came eight minutes in when senior Teddy van Beuren's blast bounced off the cross bar and over the net. The game went to the half with Brown holding a 1-0 advantage, of but junior Adrian Melville, who entered the game at the half, provided Princeton with a spark and Princeton drew even five minutes into the half. The ball was played to the top of the box where two Brown defenders converged, the ball however snuck through and Melville ran it down before sliding it past Gomez for his third goal of the season, and Princeton's first in over two-and-a-half games.
Brown answered back quickly though and when Marcos Romaneiro was taken down in the box by junior Neil Chaudhuri and awarded a penalty kick, he converted to put Brown back ahead, despite Princeton goalkeeper Erik White getting a hand on the ball.
Princeton pressed right away following the goal and evened the score less than four minutes later in the 62nd minute when Melville's crossing pass was directed in by junior Ben Young for his first of the year.
The teams played back-and-forth for the next 15 minutes until Spicer's go-ahead goal at 78:17. Young crossed the ball from the right side of the net to Spicer who cashed in with his eighth goal of the year.
Brown attacked over the final 10 minutes but were unable to crack White, who made five saves to earn the win while Gomez made three saves in the loss.
Princeton resumes play on Tuesday when the Tigers visit Seton Hall for an afternoon non-conference game.
