Keasey, McCareins Lead Princeton 11 All-Ivy Selections

PRINCETON - Eleven members of the Princeton football team, led by first-team selections Zak Keasey and Jay McCareins, earned All-Ivy honors for 2004, it was announced Nov. 23 by the Ivy League office. Keasey is a two-time first-team selection, while McCareins earned the honor for the first time.
Princeton's other All-Ivy selections were second-teamers Colin McDonough, Jeremy Moore and Justin Stull, and honorable mention recipients Jon Dekker, Abi Fadeyi, Greg Fields, Derek Javarone, Tim Strickland and Jon Veach. Keasey led all Ivy League players with 127 tackles, 21 more than the next closest player in the league (Stull). He was tied for third in the league with eight sacks and was fourth in the Ivy League with 16 tackles for loss. He made his final game a memorable one, recording 22 tackles and a pair of sacks in the 17-10 win against Dartmouth. Keasey led Princeton in tackles in each of his final three seasons.
McCareins finished second in the league with 12 passes defensed (10 breakups, two interceptions). McCareins' athleticism led to play more than any other teammate, as he was a key player on special teams and one of Princeton's top receivers in third-down situations. McCareins had huge effects in two Ivy League wins; his two blocked kicks and three late catches led Princeton to an overtime win at Columbia, and his touchdown before halftime helped Princeton past Dartmouth.
McDonough, the first-team All-Ivy punter last season, overcame a shaky start to end the season with a solid 37.3 punting average, including a 38.5-yard average in league games.
Moore, whose story of overcoming a high school car accident has been well-told over the last month, led an offensive line that helped Princeton put together the No. 3 rushing offense in the Ivy League. Moore's athleticism and versatility helped him start all 20 games that he dressed for as a member of the team.
Stull, a first-team All-Ivy linebacker, had more tackles (106) than any player on any team in the league other than Princeton. He added four sacks, seven tackles for loss and a trio of pass breakups. Stull, the first junior captain at Princeton since 1943, will be the leading figure on the 2005 defense, which will return seven starters.
Dekker caught 13 passes for 106 yards, and he greatly improved as a blocker as the year went on. He will be looked to provide an even greater role in the offense next season, both in the running and passing game.
Fadeyi, who is often overshadowed by the likes of Keasey and Stull, made 62 tackles, including eight for losses. He forced three fumbles and recorded Princeton's first interception of the season, which came in a 35-18 victory against a Lafayette team that reached the 2004 NCAA postseason.
Fields spent all season among the top 20 players in Division I-AA in all-purpose yards, and ended sixth with 157.2 yards per game. He finished tied for the league lead in punt returns with a 13.0 average, and he became the Princeton go-to receiver by the end of the season. He averaged eight catches per game in the final four after averaging 2.8 in the first six games.
Javarone tied for the league lead with 1.3 field goals per game and finished second in the league with a 72.2% success rate on field goals. He sent the Columbia game into overtime with a 21-yard field goal and won it with an extra point.
Strickland tied for the Ivy League lead with four interceptions, including a school-record three against Colgate. He added his final one in the 17-10 win over Dartmouth to end the season.
Veach led Princeton with 625 yards rushing and scored six touchdowns, including two in the win over Columbia. Veach, the lone senior co-captain, also caught 10 passes on the season.

The Princeton Football Association held The Donold B. Lourie '22 Football Banquet Monday night and handed out the following members of the 2004 football team:
Harland "Pink" Baker '22 Award - Established in 1981 by the Friends of Princeton Football in honor of Harland "Pink" Baker '22, varsity letterman on the "Team of Destiny" and longtime friend of Princeton football players. Awarded annually to that freshman defensive player of good moral character who has proven himself an intelligent and stalwart player and who has demonstrated a cooperative spirit and an ability to motivate his teammates.
2004 winner: Tim Boardman
The Charles W. Caldwell Memorial Trophy - Awarded to that senior member of the varsity football squad who has shown the greatest improvement in football during his years at Princeton. In memory of Charles W. Caldwell '25, head coach of Princeton football from 1945-1957.
