Piscataway, N.J. -- Sophomore Elyse Umeda scored 10 points in the second half, but it was too little too late as the women's basketball team fell 68-46 to Rutgers, Wednesday night. The Tigers' record drops to 2-4, while Vivian Stringer earns win 700 and improves to 5-1 on the season. Rutgers opened the game with an 18-0 run before junior Katy O'Brien hit a three from the top of the key in the 14th minute. A backdoor play from O'Brien to freshman Meagan Cowher and a jump ball hustle play from sophomore Elyse Umeda on the following possession gave the Tigers momentum. Princeton went on a 6-0 run and cut the Scarlet Knights advantage to 25-16.
O'Brien had nine points, all from behind the arc, in the first half. However, Princeton turned the ball over 11 times. The second half opened with Umeda scoring seven points; one off a three-pointer in the left corner, a breakaway lay-up off a steal at half court and a lay-up off a fast break inbounds play. Rutger's point guard Courtney Locke connected on her fifth three-pointer in the 16th minute and gave the Scarlet Knights a 51-29 advantage. The Tigers cut the lead to 19 after a lay-up from Cowher. Then at the 3:18 mark Rutgers opened its largest lead of the game, 66-40 following a good free throw from Ajavon Matee. Both Umeda and O'Brien nailed threes in the closing minutes of the game. Princeton returns to Jadwin Gym on Dec. 14 and host St. Mary's at 7 p.m.
