WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Princeton men's swimming, ranked 22nd in the latest national poll, ended its regular season in style Friday by topping Army 190-109 in West Point. Princeton won 11 races, including both relays, while Juan Valdivieso was a double winner once again.
Valdivieso won the first individual event of the evening with a time of 1:42.08 in the 200 free. Several events later, he came back to claim the 200 IM in 1:57.27. Valdivieso has been a consistent point scorer for the Tigers all season, and his senior leadership has helped carry Princeton to a perfect record in the league and the No. 22 ranking.
Of course, one swimmer can't do it all, and the Tigers are loaded with depth. Mike Zee placed second to Valdivieso in the 200 free, but he came back to win the 200 back in 1:51.70. Chester Yarbrough (fly/1:55.22) and Jeremy Tillman (breast/2:09.60) made sure Princeton earned a clean sweep in the 200 events. Evan Delaney won the 100 breast in 1:00.43, while Mike Salerno took the 100 free in 46.58. Thorn Baccich won the 100 fly in 51.18. Ryan McCabe needed a few more laps to win his event, but he finished first in the 500 free in 4:43.22.
Princeton sandwiched those individual wins between a pair of relay victories. In fact, Princeton went 1-2 in both the first event, the 200-yard medley relay, and the last event, the 400 free. The 'A' team claimed the 200 in 1:35.15, just ahead of the 'B' team's time of 1:35.43. In the finale, the 'A' team won with more breathing room, finishing in 3:07.24, ahead of the time of 3:09.14.
The men's swimming team ends its regular season with a 9-1 dual meet record, as well as a win in its Princeton Invitational. Counting the Invitational, the Tigers were 6-0 at home, and they hope that trend will continue from March 6-8, when they host the EISL championships.
