Men's Swimming Jumps Out To Early Lead After Day One Of EISLs

PRINCETON, N.J. - Will Reinhardt captured the 50 free and led off on Princeton's victorious 200 free relay team to ignite the No. 22 Princeton men's swimming and diving team to an early lead in the EISL championships, held at the Tigers' own DeNunzio Pool. Princeton holds a 67.5-point edge on the Harvard Crimson after Thursday.
The Tigers jumped ahead immediately, winning the first event of the competition. Led off by Reinhardt, the 200 free relay came in at 1:20.32 to surpass Navy. Reinhardt would get the job done by himself three events later, leaving the field in the 50 free and winning in a time of 19.91.
Princeton, looking for its 15th EISL title, is being chased by Harvard, the defending league champion and the No. 25 team in the nation. The Crimson earned wins from Rassan Grant (200 IM) and Ricky Roy (1-meter diving), as well as its 400 medley relay team. The Tigers placed third in the relay, and Meir Hasbani placed third in the 200 IM (1:50.65). Princeton did earn points from Nick Lee as well, who finished eighth in the 1-meter diving.
While in the 2003 EISLs, only Princeton and Harvard competitors won events, a new team has already stood atop the victory podium. Cornell freshman Mike Smit held off Princeton's Juan Valdivieso (2nd) and Justin Chiles (4th) to claim the 500 free.
Friday's preliminaries begin at 11 a.m., and the championships will begin at 6 p.m.
