East Orange, N.J. - The Princeton baseball team dropped a midweek non-conference game to Seton Hall 11-5 Wednesday afternoon at Owen T. Carrol Field. After a scoreless first inning, the Pirates put runs on the board in the next five inning to put up a lead that they would not relinquish. Junior Will Venable and sophomore Andrew Salini led the Princeton effort with two hits apiece.
Seton Hall jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning by stringing together three hits and a groundout. The Pirates added two more in the third on a two-run homer off the bat of Tim Pahuta.
The Tigers cut the lead in half in the fourth inning. Senior Ryan Reich led off the inning with a single to centerfield. After sophomore Stephen Wendell walked, the pair each advanced two bases, Reich scoring, on a passed ball. Wendell scored when sophomore Matthew Becker hit into an RBI-groundout. Seton Hall tacked on a run in the fourth and three in both the fifth and sixth innings, while the Tigers added one in both innings. Princeton's run in the fifth came when senior Tim Lahey hit a sac fly to score Salini who led off the inning with a triple to right center, and the Tigers sixth-inning run came when sophomore Aaron Prince hit a sac fly to score Venable following a double and a stolen base.
The Tigers added an additional run in the eighth. Prince and senior Steve Young drew back-to-back walks to lead off the inning. They both advanced on a wild pitch and Prince scored on a passed ball to make the final score 11-5.
Senior Brian Biegen started the game took the loss to drop to 2-1. He pitched three innings and allowed four runs on seven hits. Junior Chad Tongue, freshman Michael Zaret, junior Aaron Herr and junior Brian Kappel each pitched in relief. Seton Hall's Buddy Hausmann earned the win.
Princeton is now 19-14 on the season and resumes action on Saturday for the first of two doubleheaders and four games against Penn at Clarke Field. Game time both days is 12 p.m.
